Tomorrow’s voices asked for their views on the aviation industry

CANSO has partnered with the SESAR Engage 2 Network and CANSO Member Firstfruits Services to find out what younger people in the aviation industry or current students in related subjects, feel about their future opportunities and the challenges aviation faces.

The initiative supports the development of the Tomorrow’s Voices: Future Skies activities that will take place on Thursday 21 March at Airspace World, the world’s largest ATM and near space event, in Geneva from 19 to 21 March.

Eduardo Garcia, Senior Manager Future Skies, CANSO, commented: “Through this survey, we aim to understand the experiences of students and young professionals in our industry thus far, along with their perceptions of future challenges and opportunities.”

He adds: “As we move towards realising the Complete Air Traffic (CATS) Global Council’s vision for the skies of 2045, the input from this generation, who will be at the forefront of managing those skies, is indispensable. Hence, we are organising the Tomorrow’s Voices events at Airspace World, where the survey results will play a pivotal role in shaping our strategies.” Anyone between the ages of 20-28 is welcome to take part in the survey, which must be completed by 16 February. Survey participants will be entered into a draw to win Euros 100 towards the cost of their travel to Geneva.

Angy Odysseos, CANSO Media Relations Manager, added: “As a young professional in the industry myself, I encourage all my young peers and students to complete the survey and help contribute to our industry insights. To identify the challenges we face and their potential solutions, and to support the future of aviation talent. I look forward to seeing all of you  at Airspace World.”

Airspace World 2024 registrations already bigger than last year

Airspace World 2024, the world’s largest Air Traffic Management event, is on track to welcome many more delegates through the doors of the Palexpo Centre in Geneva in eight weeks’ time.

Current tracking of registrations is almost double what it was at this point in the run up to 2023’s inaugural event. Agnes Krischik, Airspace World Show Director, said: “All the criteria of our registrations are ahead of where we were this time last year, including the global spread of delegates with all the world’s regions represented, the full range of ATM industries, and the seniority of those leaders and decision makers who are coming. And with technology constantly developing, we are seeing much more interest from the worlds of uncrewed aviation, drones, and AI. It’s going to be a busy and fascinating show.

“It’s also really good news that more than half of those who have registered so far will be coming to Airspace World for the first time. Clearly the word is out that Airspace World 2024 is the place to be if you want access to the key players, decision makers, and leaders in the air traffic management and crewed and uncrewed aviation industries.”

Anyone thinking of joining those early registrants are encouraged to do so by registering now. Agnes added: “I would also encourage anyone thinking of coming to Geneva to book their accommodation as soon as possible too. They can do that via this link on the Airspace World website, where you can also find ways to get support should you need a visa to come to Switzerland.”

ATM Awards submission deadline extended

The deadline for submissions to this year’s ATM Awards, produced in partnership with ATM Magazine, has been extended until 26 January. The awards, the winners of which will be announced at Airspace World 2024, encourage pioneering concepts and acknowledge significant achievements by leaders, initiatives, and organisations in the air traffic management industry.

Pathway to Advanced Air Mobility (AAM): Shaping the Air Mobility of the Future

CANSO’s Senior Manager, Future Skies, Dr. Eduardo Garcia, and Dr Vassilis Agouridas, Leader of the UAM Initiative Cities Community (UIC2), introduces one of the key themes to be explored at Airspace World 2024, the Pathway to Advanced Air Mobility

The future of air mobility will be unveiled at Airspace World 2024, in Geneva from 19 to 21 March when the Urban Air Mobility-UAM- Initiative Cities Community, known as UIC2, and CANSO partner to introduce the Pathway to Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) thematic track. This collaborative initiative promises a diverse array of discussions, dialogue, and insights, all aligned with the overarching theme of Pathway to Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) – Shaping the Air Mobility of the Future.

Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) is on the brink of revolutionising aviation, ushering in a highly automated and collaborative environment. This transformation will be powered by cutting-edge technologies such as automated traffic management, digital ecosystems, sustainable solutions, new aircraft designs, advanced communications, and evolving infrastructure. AAM services will encompass passenger transport, cargo delivery, and a multitude of aerial services, benefitting communities in urban, regional, and international contexts.

AAM holds the potential to enhance intermodal transportation, promote sustainability, and elevate the quality of life, safety, and security for citizens. The Pathway to Advanced Air Mobility provides a clear roadmap for harnessing this potential, breaking down the journey into incremental steps. The first step focuses on foundational elements, including the development of enabling technologies and the validation of their use in various scenarios. As we progress, AAM serves as a testing ground for the integration of autonomy and artificial intelligence into the air traffic management system, aiming for a unified system that optimises efficiency, safety, and sustainability.

At Airspace World 2024, the Pathway to Advanced Air Mobility will showcase a diverse range of presentations and panel discussions, which are poised to be pivotal in steering the overarching discourse on AAM during the event. Notably, it will include three high-level panels expertly organised by UIC2 and CANSO, each dedicated to key facets of Advanced Air Mobility (AAM):

  1. The Era of AAM – Advancing Intermodal and Electrified Transport: This panel explores perspectives of sustainable mobility with AAM, emphasising electrified transport, the potential of electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing (eVTOL) technologies, intermodal connectivity and infrastructure.
  2. AAM Vision Panel – Scaling Up Operations: This panel delves into scaling up AAM operations, addressing demand, airspace and infrastructure readiness, and specific use cases.
  3. Next-Level Governance of AAM – Co-Creating the Future: The third panel focuses on co-creating agile and resilient governance schemes, highlighting top-down and bottom-up approaches, and the necessary skills and capacity-building for public authorities.

Airspace World 2024 is a dynamic exploration of the future of our skies. UIC2 and CANSO invite all participants to be part of the journey towards Advanced Air Mobility. Join us in shaping the future of air mobility. Stay tuned for speaker announcements, and let’s co-create the air mobility of the future together!

Lisbon named future home of Airspace World from 2025 onwards

CANSO has today announced Lisbon’s Feira Internacional de Lisboa (FIL) as the new venue for Airspace World 2025 and beyond.

Simon Hocquard, Director General CANSO said: “The CANSO Executive Committee has decided that, from 2025, Airspace World will be held in Lisbon, Portugal. This means that the 2024 edition of Airspace World will be our last in Geneva. Lisbon is an excellent choice for our flagship event’s new home as it is easily accessible by air, and is a vibrant city which will offer plenty of opportunities for networking.”

The Executive Committee decision was informed by extensive research by the Airspace World team to identify alternative venues. The team ranked a shortlist of five venues against a wide-ranging list of criteria including inbound tariffs and shipping costs, hotel and subsistence costs for participants, venue suitability and sustainability, ease of working with local suppliers, and accessibility and attractiveness of the venue city.

“I am very much looking forward to the move,” Simon added.  “I look forward to welcoming attendees and exhibitors alike to Airspace World Geneva in 2024 and to Airspace World Lisbon in 2025.”
