From historic neighbourhoods and rooftop viewpoints to late-night music venues and hidden local favourites, Lisbon offers far more than conference halls and exhibition spaces. If you are extending your stay, or want ideas on how to spend a leisurely evening, here are 10 experiences worth adding to your Airspace World itinerary.
1. Wander the streets of Alfama
The oldest district in Lisbon remains one of its most atmospheric. Lose yourself among narrow cobbled streets, tiled buildings, hidden staircases and small bars tucked into historic corners. It is also the spiritual home of Fado, with live performances filling restaurants and taverns most evenings.
2. Take in the views from Lisbon’s miradouros
Lisbon is built on hills, and the city’s famous miradouros (viewpoints) are part of its magic. Popular favourites include Miradouro da Senhora do Monte and Miradouro de Santa Catarina, particularly at sunset with a drink in hand.
3. Explore Belém and its riverside landmarks
Home to some of Portugal’s most famous historic sites, the Belém district combines grand architecture, riverside walks and legendary custard tarts from Pastéis de Belém. Highlights include Belém Tower and Jerónimos Monastery.
4. Ride Tram 28 — at least once
Yes, it is touristy — but for good reason. The iconic yellow tram rattles through many of Lisbon’s most beautiful neighbourhoods and offers one of the best introductions to the city’s steep streets and daily life.
5. Discover Lisbon after dark
Lisbon’s nightlife is wonderfully varied. The Bairro Alto district is packed with lively bars, while venues such as Hot Clube de Portugal offer intimate late-night jazz sessions. Karaoke fans will also find plenty of energetic bars around Cais do Sodré and Bairro Alto, often running well into the early hours.
6. Experience an evening of live Fado
Even if you do not understand the lyrics, the emotion of Fado is unforgettable. Small venues in Alfama and Bairro Alto often provide the most authentic experiences, with candlelit rooms, Portuguese wine and haunting live music.
7. Visit LX Factory for a different side of Lisbon
Set beneath the 25 de Abril Bridge, LX Factory has transformed an old industrial complex into a creative hub of cafés, bars, bookshops, restaurants and street art. It is ideal for a slower afternoon away from the busiest tourist areas.
8. Find hidden corners in Graça
Less polished than central tourist districts, Graça offers a more local feel, with relaxed cafés, quieter viewpoints and traditional neighbourhood charm. It is a great place to escape the crowds while still enjoying incredible city views.
9. Eat seafood — slowly
Portuguese cuisine deserves time. Whether it is grilled sardines, octopus rice, garlic prawns or fresh cod dishes, Lisbon is one of Europe’s great seafood cities. The best meals are often the longest ones.
10. Simply spend time by the river
One of Lisbon’s greatest pleasures is its atmosphere. Walk the waterfront near Praça do Comércio, stop for a drink beside the Tagus River and enjoy a city that feels both energetic and relaxed at the same time.
