Delivering technologies for a safer world
Recent global pandemic aside, we have seen a steadfast increase in air traffic throughout the world over the years. Technology has kept a robust pace to meet the ever-growing demands of air traffic management. However, smaller nations and emerging economies have grappled to keep up with implementing the latest air traffic control and management technologies to match those of bigger economies.
Yet, it is imperative we make the same or similar technology affordable to smaller nations and emerging economies, for the benefit of the global economy, aviation industry in general, and enhanced safety for all air passengers around the world.
Regardless of the region, Air Navigation Service Providers (ANSPs) around the world have a common goal: to ensure that their operations are efficient and capable of delivering improved services to airspace users, both traditional and new while reducing the environmental impact of aviation.
In this presentation, we would like to focus on available ATM tools for small nations, and how they can deliver air traffic management services on par with the large nations’ expansive ATM systems. A smaller, more cost-efficient system does not mean a less advanced one.
Sophisticated ATM automation systems for procedural and surveillance airspace–integrating oceanic/procedural, enroute, approach, and tower control (including remote/virtual tower systems) with effective tools for controller training need not be the preserve of large, wealthy countries. Small countries, especially those with procedural airspace or mixed procedural/surveillance airspace, can avail themselves of sophisticated capabilities to improve the level of service to airspace users.
Small nations have options regarding their air traffic management systems: they can improve services in procedural airspace with the introduction of reduced separation to allow more efficient use of the airspace.
